CALLIE CUMBERLAND, Director
Originally from the Tampa Bay Area, Florida, Callie is a graduate student at Florida Gulf Coast University studying Clinical Mental Health Counseling. While enrolled at Liberty University studying Mental Health Counseling, Callie interned with Beauty From Ashes™ and with BFA's founder, Julie Shematz, when she was with The Salvation Army. Callie has a passion to reach and restore victims of sexual abuse and is specializing in equine assisted learning and therapy.
DAVID G. GIBBS, III, ESQ., Secretary
Attorney David C. Gibbs III is the President and General Counsel of the National Center for Life and Liberty, a ministry organization that defends life and liberty freedoms nationwide. Mr. Gibbs speaks regularly to audiences in churches and conferences while also litigating cases as a trial attorney. He hosts the weekly radio program Law Talk Live on the Moody Radio Network and has authored five books including Fighting for Dear Life and Understanding the Constitution.
Attorney Gibbs graduated from Duke Law School and manages the Gibbs Law Firm with offices in Dallas, Texas; St. Petersburg, Florida; and Washington, D.C. He is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court and numerous federal circuit and district courts nationwide. He has also been admitted to the State Bars of Florida, Minnesota, Colorado, North Dakota, Ohio, Texas, Tennessee, Michigan, and the District of Columbia.
Attorney Gibbs was the lead attorney in the Terri Schiavo case representing the parents as they fought to save the life of their daughter. This case went before the United States Supreme Court twice in ten days. Mr. Gibbs is a frequent spokesperson on radio and television having appeared on many major news and talk programs.
Attorney Gibbs believes: “If it’s wrong, fight it. If it’s right, fight for it.” His life verse is Matthew 25:40, where Jesus said, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these, my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”
Attorney Gibbs has been married to his wife, Carin, for over nineteen years. They have been blessed with four children; Heather (18), Heidi (16), David and Danielle (14-year-old twins). They make their home in the Dallas, Texas area.
JULIE TAYLOR SHEMATZ, MA, Founder / Board Chairman
Originally from Indiana, Julie Shematz is the founder of Beauty From Ashes™ Ministries. She holds a Masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Florida Gulf Coast University and has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University / Herron School of Art. Mrs. Shematz was the Director of Social Services for The Salvation Army, Tampa Area Command, for three years where she established The Salvation Army's first approved anti-human trafficking emergency shelter in the state of Florida, in addition to overseeing seven residential programs with over 230 beds for homeless persons. She is also a licensed minister, additionally attended Purdue University on a track scholarship and studied as a triple major in Art Education K-12, Visual Communication Design and Fine Arts with a minor in Learning Disabilities.
STEVEN JOSEPH SHEMATZ, President & Treasurer
Originally from Maryland, Mr. Shematz also holds his Associates Degree from Manatee College in Graphic Design and is a recovered drug addict who is a graduate of Teen Challenge International. He served on full time staff for five years at Teen Challenge South West Florida as the intake coordinator, worship director, information technology, media specialist, work detail supervisor and was the personal assistant to the executive director. Steve currently is employed with Apple, Inc. as a certified MacGenius and Creative and has been with them since 2005. Steve met Julie Shematz in Southwest Florida, where they have been married since August of 2003. They reside in North Fort Myers, FL with two dogs (Jehu and Mocoe) and horses (Rodeo Murphy and Morning Star Spirit).
DONALD MILTNER, Non Profit Consultant
In September 2012, Donald Miltner was hired as a non profit consultant to Beauty From Ashes™ Ministries. Mr. Miltner has a Master's of Business Administration from Harvard University. He has provided consulting to World Vision, Navigators, Columbia University, University of Missouri, Regent University, Bill Graham Association, World Relief, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and Presidents Reagan, Bush, Carter, and Nixxon programs at the White House.
